The opportunity to start Brush Strokes Gallery came when Art First Gallery found a new site and sought a group to complete their lease at 108 Hanover Street. Only three days after meeting with Art First, Bonnie Halford with 11 other artists launched Brush Strokes Gallery, opening on March 1, 2004. The initial First Friday Tour of Galleries was quite dynamic! It included a tornado watch-complete with rain, hail, thunder, and a final beautiful double rainbow!
As economic events unfolded and the downtown environment thrived, gallery members explored options. In 2006 an overhead sign logo of primary colors was hung to mark the move of Brush Stroked Gallery to 810 Caroline Street where visitors in the gallery could survey art on the light-filled mezzanine and overlook Caroline Street below. In 2009 the members relocated the gallery at 824 Caroline Street, sharing an entranceway with Art First Gallery. As opportunities have arisen, the gallery has hosted art shows for student groups, showcased talented musicians, helped welcome the State Commission of the Arts, donated to relief projects spearheaded by students of the University of Mary Washington, and participated in commemoration of the 400th Anniversary of the founding of the Jamestown settlement, and numerous other organizations. Fund-raising events to benefit the community have included the Spotsylvania Museum, Fredericksburg Area Food Bank, and the Fredericksburg Chapter of the SPCA.
Brush Strokes Gallery supported the establishment of the Fredericksburg Arts Commission. Later in 2010 a defined Arts District in Historic Downtown was set up by the city of Fredericksburg to promote Fredericksburg as "an arts destination."
