Meet Artist Marianna Smith

Marianna is a children’s illustrator and storyboard artist based in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Her work tells stories of fantasy and science fiction for younger audiences.

Marianna says, "While my style and interests are evolving, my work usually depicts an emotional state. I like to think that, rather than illustrating a concrete object, I illustrate a feeling. Some of my favorite children’s books from my childhood, such as The Little Prince, The Kissing Hand, and The Velveteen Rabbit instilled such emotions whenever I read them. These stories are my earliest sources of inspiration for my current work. I strive to instill a similar level of emotional complexity in my illustrations. If I feel a fluttering deep in my chest, smile, chuckle, or even cry while painting, I know I’m on the right track."
